Cure Today interviews Robin Tuohy about Myeloma Action Month.

Although myeloma is the second most common blood cancer worldwide, most people are unfamiliar with the disease, and worse, diagnosed late because they are unaware of what it is or what the symptoms are.

But the nonprofit organization International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is working to change that, as they declared March to be Myeloma Action Month.

“One of the most pertinent results of Myeloma Action Month is broadening awareness of symptoms and red flags of the disease to both patients and health care providers,” Robin Tuohy, senior director of Support Groups at IMF, said in an interview with CURE.

Dr. Monica Taylor interview on the Jamaica Observer

Dr. Monica Taylor is a wife and mother of three adult children, but she is also someone touched by multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells. As such she has taken up the cause this month, Myeloma Action Month.

Dr. Taylor told All Woman that in 2011, normal life was interrupted when a routine executive blood work panel revealed that her protein levels were not in the normal range.

“With multiple myeloma (which causes cancer cells to accumulate in the bone marrow where they crowd out healthy blood cells) some people have problems and then the doctor tries to find out what is wrong, but there is a small percentage of people who have no symptoms and I was one of those,” she explained.

Tennessee proclaims March 2018 as Myeloma Action Month

Governor Bill Haslam has proclaimed March 2018 Myeloma Action Month.  According to the International Myeloma Foundation, Myeloma, also referred to as multiple myeloma, is an incurable cancer of cells in the bone marrow. Myeloma currently affects more than 100,000 people in the United States, with an estimated 30,330 new cases diagnosed in 2016. Myeloma is increasing in numbers and is becoming more common in younger patients, with possible links to environmental toxins.

Carlene’s INCREDIBLE ACTIONS for MAM

Good Morning !

The IMF Support Group Monthly Newsletter March 2017 is perfect for me as a support group leader. I can now have the updated resources in a monthly newsletter! And not always have to go to our IMF Support Group Leader Toolkit website to find an updated article or video.

I appreciate all the handwork it has taken to put this newsletter together, Thank You!

March Myeloma Action Month 2017 has been a Great Month! My support group ‘Showed Up and Showed Out,’ for the IMF. We  made Myeloma Awareness Month truly an Action, one person, one action at a time. We had a fantastic Fundraiser Chairperson Victoria Kibler. Our support group set a goal of raising $3100 and have exceeded that amount to over $4,000 and counting! We have mailed letters to our congresspersons, doctors, posted the beautiful support group flyers the IMF printed out for our support group  personally, talked with family, friends and neighbors about what multiple myeloma is and ways they can help. I am so proud of my support group members, most of my group are currently in treatment, including myself! We all made March our priority in sharing, informing everyone we talked with just how important, vital, dedicated and determined the IMF has always been to each one of us, our families, community, country and world. They should all know the names Susie Novis Durie and Dr. Brian Durie and what they have accomplished through creating the IMF.

Our April meeting is this coming Friday, everyone is so excited and proud of our groups accomplishment this month! I plan on taking pictures and posting them on our website. I am so thankful and grateful to have such a wonderful support group. We are small in number but faithful, caring, supportive, encouraging, positive, close to one another and determine to stay strong advocated for our health.

We appreciate all that each one of you do each day for the IMF, for us, everyone! Robin, Kelly, Nancy, Sue, Anne and Jon

Have a Safe and Wonderful Week!

Blessings,

Carlene Pratt

Janet Kerrigan summarizes a successful month

We are The Myrtle Beach Multiple Myeloma Support Group in South Carolina. We just had a Fundraiser with raffle and Silent Auction items and live band. We had an incredible showing of Support, including nurses from the Oncology clinics.

We sold bracelets, did Memorial balloons, and raised lots of money for The IMF.

Prior to the fundraiser, I asked offices to wear Burgundy for March, sold ribbons, and educated every person I contacted.

I was interviewed by HTC radio/ TV program and Carolina Live another TV program. The Sun News also interviewed me for awareness and the support group.

Action does not take a lot, just be creative.

I feel incredibly honored to be able to have the International Myeloma Foundation’s support with all that I do, thank you so much!
